In September 2025 Momento Seguros, an auto insurer operating fully digitally in Mexico, announced the close of a USD 10 million Series A co-led by Hedosophia and American Family Ventures. It is one of the few institutional rounds of the period directed at a Mexican insurer with its own licence, and it brings the corporate venture arm of a US carrier into the local auto market.
The transaction
- Parties. Momento Seguros, founded in 2021 and a Y Combinator alumnus, as issuer. Hedosophia and American Family Ventures co-lead; Foundation Capital, Y Combinator, HSCM and Clocktower participate (Entorno VC, 9 September 2025).
- Instrument and amount. Series A equity round of USD 10 million; Techla reports USD 10.25 million. Valuation not disclosed.
- Use of proceeds. Expansion to Monterrey, Querétaro and Puebla; artificial intelligence for underwriting and claims; in-app claims handling; launch of commercial policies.
- Disclosed metrics. More than 10,000 active customers, a network of 450 agents and a 4.9 out of 5 app rating (Techla, 12 September 2025). One source also cites “more than 100,000 drivers”; the figure is not consistent with the former and we treat it with caution.
- Regulation. The company states it obtained its regulatory authorisation in the shortest time in its history (Entorno VC). Written premiums, loss ratio and combined ratio not disclosed.
Value drivers
The licence, not the app. Operating as an authorised insurer, rather than as an agent or MGA on a third party’s balance sheet, changes the nature of the asset: there is regulatory capital, reserves and CNSF supervision. In our reading, that condition explains the presence of American Family Ventures, whose mandate is to invest in insurance businesses and not only in distribution software.
Hybrid distribution. Momento sells direct and through 450 agents. In an auto market that still rests on the agent, the ability to supply that channel with digital issuance is, in our reading, a scale argument that a pure direct insurer does not have.
AI-driven underwriting and claims. Proceeds go to proprietary underwriting models and in-app claims handling. The value lies not in the label but in the combined ratio it produces; the sources do not publish it, and the investment committee of the next round will ask for it.
Scarcity of comparables. The region closed 2025 with USD 199 million of venture capital in insurtech across 536 companies, with Brazil taking 74% of the capital (Latam Insurtech Journey). A licensed Mexican digital insurer with an institutional round is a rare asset, and scarcity supports the valuation even when it is not disclosed.
What the market is signalling
For Mexican insurtechs, the signal is that institutional capital remains available to those who complete the regulatory path. The licence takes time, consumes capital and requires reporting to the CNSF, but it is the asset that separates an insurer from an intermediary and the one that allows a strategic investor such as American Family Ventures to justify the cheque before its investment committee.
For the country’s incumbent carriers, the entry of a foreign corporate sponsor into digital auto anticipates competition that no longer comes only from local startups. In our reading, the most likely response is not to build but to invest or acquire, as GNP did with Meddi in health in March 2026.
G2’s reading for a mandate
A digital insurer going out to raise capital should bring to the competitive process what this close leaves implicit: status of the authorisation, minimum guarantee capital and its coverage, combined ratio by cohort, acquisition cost by channel (direct versus agent) and reserve projections. With that data, the mandate can segment the counterparty list into generalist funds, carrier venture arms and reinsurers, and negotiate the term sheet with a lead investor that brings reinsurance capacity and not only capital.
