In December 2025 Plata announced an up-to-USD 500 million private credit facility arranged by Nomura, described as the largest financing to a Mexican digital financial services company. Six months later, Oaktree, Macquarie Group, Fasanara and Banco Covalto joined the facility with USD 300 million in total commitments. The transaction shows how a card issuer turned bank funds its loan book with institutional debt before relying on deposits.
The transaction
Nomura acted as arranger of the facility announced on 15 December 2025. Tenor, pricing, collateral and tranche structure were not disclosed. The stated use: growth, infrastructure and the launch of banking operations. At the announcement, Plata reported 2.5 million active card customers, more than 3,000 employees, more than USD 1 billion invested in Mexico and more than USD 1.6 billion in cumulative institutional financing.
On 4 June 2026 the company announced USD 300 million in commitments from Oaktree, Macquarie Group, Fasanara and Banco Covalto within the same facility. By then Banco Plata had been operating as a bank since March 2026, had closed its USD 405 million Series C at USD 5.0 billion (April 2026) and reported more than 4 million active customers and more than USD 2 billion raised across equity and debt. Expansión mentions, in the context of the announcement, deposit-taking and a brokerage licence as the next funding steps.
Value drivers
A loan book with a track record. When the facility was announced the company had been originating credit cards in Mexico for more than two years (it was founded in April 2023 and Banco Plata received its licence in December 2024). In April 2026 it reported a USD 800 million book. In our reading, the size of the facility reflects the book the lenders could audit, not a projection.
A scalable structure. An “up to” USD 500 million facility with one arranger and later commitments from four lenders allows funding to scale without renegotiating the document. Fasanara had been a lender since 2025; Oaktree, Macquarie and Covalto are new to Plata’s structure.
Cost and duration. Chief financial officer Marcos Kantt described the goal as funding that is “durable, cost effective, and less reliant on short-term capital” (PR Newswire, June 2026). In our reading, the facility is the bridge between the capital markets funding of 2025 and the deposits the banking licence enables.
Equity beneath the debt. Between the facility announcement and the June commitments, Plata added USD 405 million of equity. The lenders that joined in June did so on a balance sheet with more capital and an operating banking licence.
What the market is signalling
Loan book funding for Mexican fintechs in the period was solved with private credit and international banks, not with public securitisation: Clara renewed USD 150 million with Goldman Sachs (February 2026), Jeeves obtained USD 100 million through a special purpose vehicle with Community Investment Management (December 2025) and Bravo closed EUR 200 million with Fortress (February 2026). Plata’s facility is the largest of the group and the only one, among those reviewed, with an arranger syndicating third-party commitments.
For lenders on the path to a banking licence, the signal is that institutional creditors will fund ahead of deposit-taking if the book has a track record and equity keeps pace. For regional comparables, the reference is the USD 150 million warehouse-style facility J.P. Morgan led for Addi in Colombia (April 2026), with Fasanara as co-investor.
G2’s reading for a mandate
A facility of this size is prepared with the loan book, not with the deck: vintages, delinquency by segment, concentrations and a cash flow model that survives the credit committee’s scenario. In our reading, Plata’s sequence (a single lender in 2025, an arranger in December, a syndicate in June) is the path for an originator moving from a bilateral line to a scalable facility, and the initial document should be drafted with the lenders that will join later in mind.
